Automatic Parking Lift Systems Save Money – and Are Green
Automated car parking lift systems are a green solution for the urban problem of what to do with stationary cars. And the good news is – that "green” also means saving money. Automated lots are cost effective and, because they are stacking cars, less expensive per lot space. They also can house as many cars in a much smaller building, with diminished land costs and footprint. They reduce pollution, as they dispense with cars circling up and down ramps looking for spaces. Because of that, parking lift lots can enhance a building's LEED rating.
Parking Lift: An Old Idea Whose Time Has Come Again
The first parking lift garage was in Paris in 1905, and consisted of a two-story building with an elevator hoisting cars. Hydraulic garages made further inroads in the 1920s but it has only been in the last few decades that the industry has taken off. Cities both in Europe and North America are increasingly conscious of land costs, and aware that vast surface lots are a poor way to maximize real estate. Parking lift lots can be constructed entirely below-ground, of course; the hydraulic technology works in both directions. And because there is no need for access by outsiders to the automated garage, the underground lots are crime-free, which might be bad news for makers of horror films, but great news for drivers. Hydraulic machinery is capable of handling heavy vehicles, and does not take up much space.
Applications of Parking Lifts in Residential Settings
The use of parking lift systems is not limited to narrow urban lots, of course. Suburban dwellers lucky enough to have a double-car garage can increase their parking capacity by installing a multi-base parking lift system. Residents of tightly packed urban areas can also solve the perennial city parking dilemma by doubling or tripling their parking potential in the same amount of space they previously used for one car. And, of course, parking lift systems are perfect value-adders for larger residential and commercial buildings where parking space is also at a premium.
